Gratitude, gratitude, gratitude…
A lot of the Self- Help guru’s preach being grateful, and I’m all for that. However, it can be tough to “genuinely” be grateful when you’re broke, or sick, or alone, or lacking whatever it is you truly feel you need in your life. Let’s say it’s money. It can be difficult to be thankful for the money you have, when all you have is debt, and are living paycheck to paycheck. You end up trying to fake it, then you end up at the very opposite of grateful, you end up resentful and fearful.
So, what should one do? As good ol’ George Costanza from Seinfeld once said, do the opposite. (Hi I’m George, I’m bald, unemployed, and I live with my parents) Do the opposite? Yes, try and be grateful for what you are lacking, rather than what you have. Imagine how you would feel if you suddenly came into a ton of money. Wouldn’t you be incredibly grateful for all the time you spent lacking money? After all, that’s what makes having money so great, the fact that you never had it! It’s so much better than if you were born into it, then you can’t really be joyful over getting more.
So, start to say thank you for this lack NOW, knowing that it is actually the blessing, more so than the money. Once you take this “as if” attitude, money shall follow.
Wishing you all the best,
Rich
